"How many placements can you guarantee?"

Hi Reader,

If you're writing an RFP or scope of work for PR help, the expected results section was probably the easiest part.

A set number of media placements in 90 days is easy to picture.

I'm often asked to commit to that kind of number, and I understand why. But even when I spot a few great story ideas in a first meeting, I don't know yet if the information I need to bring them to life is available. Not every org can turn PR requests around quickly, and pulling the data or finding the right voices can be a month-long project in itself.

This Week’s Quick PR Tip: Gather What Your Stories Need Before You Ask for Guarantees

Placements take more than a loose story idea. They take visuals, data, someone with lived or professional experience, and a media-trained spokesperson who can stay on message and work around a reporter's timeline.

Whoever you hire also has to understand your org's goals - growth, funding, reputation - so the right stories show up at the right time in the right places.

Sorting that out is part of the job you're hiring for, so it's okay if you're not there yet. Just know those are the questions you'll be asked.

So before you finalize that RFP, make sure you can give your PR partner access to all of it from day one.

You can still expect placements. They'll just come more easily when no one has to go hunting for the pieces.

What's one story your team has been sitting on because you don't have what you need to tell it yet?

Until next week,
Rhiannon

Monday Morning PR Minute ⏱️ Your weekly dose of PR inspiration | Read time: 1 minute | Hi Reader, A board member says, "We really should be in the news more," everyone nods, and somehow it ends up on your to-do list. Right alongside the newsletter, social media, website updates, and the event next month. I've been in that room as the PR person on the board, and when it comes up, all eyes turn to me. I agree the mission deserves attention, and I know the staff person has no room for what...

Monday Morning PR Minute ⏱️ Your weekly dose of PR inspiration | Read time: 1 minute | Hi Reader, Your big announcement finally has a date on the calendar, and leadership wants to make a big splash and get media attention for it. This is usually when organizations call me, hoping to get the launch, new building, or milestone into their dream (usually top-tier) outlets. I love that energy, and the way we set them up for success is to start building relationships with reporters well before the...

Monday Morning PR Minute ⏱️ Your weekly dose of PR inspiration | Read time: 1 minute | Hi Reader, You've got a board or leadership update on the calendar, and I'm guessing you plan to walk through everything you did this quarter: Published # of social posts; got X likes and reshares Sent # of emails; got X opens Launched X campaign; saw X engagement But none of those numbers tell leadership whether your work is moving the organization toward anything they actually care about. I'm currently...
