I decided to handwash dishes for the foreseeable future

Hi Reader,

When was the last time something new got added to your overstuffed workload - today, maybe? My guess is your first thought wasn't "what can I let drop" - it was "how do I squeeze this in too?"

I'm working with two comms leads living this every day. Both run their entire marketing and communications department for large nonprofits, solo. One's so buried in day-to-day tasks and requests she can't see the strategic picture of what she should actually be doing. The other just got handed a whole new initiative on top of an already full job. Neither decided to drop anything - it just got tacked on.

Queue my own version. Our new dishwasher started leaking, and the repair company gave me a same-day appointment (great!) but a five-hour window (not great, I already had client calls scheduled). My first instinct: figure out how to do both.

This Week’s Quick PR Tip: Set Boundaries and Decide What's Getting Bumped

Capacity doesn't stretch just because something new landed - something else has to give. Next time someone hands you something new, resist the urge to just absorb it.

"But I can't let anything slip!" Not true. I guarantee something on your plate is a "nice to do," but not absolutely necessary. Pick important over nice to.

You can't do both well with the bandwidth you've got. Owning the tradeoff is the strategic move. Mine was deciding we'd be handwashing dishes for the foreseeable future.

Let me know - what's one thing you're consciously letting slip this week?

See you next week,
Rhiannon

Monday Morning PR Minute ⏱️ Your weekly dose of PR inspiration | Read time: 1 minute | Hi Reader, You have difficult news to share with your community or customers, and every instinct is telling you to wait and hope no one notices. I've had two client conversations this month around this same thing. One had bad news to share with the people they serve and kept rewriting the message until it barely said anything. For another client, we were pitching a feel-good story, but they wanted us to...

Monday Morning PR Minute ⏱️ Your weekly dose of PR inspiration | Read time: 1 minute | Hi Reader, My kids went back to school last week. 🙌 While my kids didn't want their frat house summer to end, it was time. IYKYK. Every morning since my son started kindergarten, I've said the same thing on the way out the door: "Have fun, work hard, and be kind." After a few weeks of hearing me say it to her brother, my daughter started asking me to "say me the words" when I dropped her off at preschool....
